After thanking each outstanding volunteer individually, Governor Charlie Crist addresses 2009 Points of Light recipients at a reception in the Governor’s mansion January 26, 2010.

GOVERNOR CRIST NAMES DOROTHY MINNICK OF ORLANDO AS GOVERNOR'S POINT OF LIGHT

In recognizing Dorothy Minnick recently, Governor Charlie Crist said, "Dorothy has a loving, caring heart for children in her community who need a strong adult role model. The attention and guidance she offers are undoubtedly making a positive difference in their lives."

Minnick, 90, was instrumental in the development and founding of Azalea Park Super Kids Bible Club, a local organization committed to helping at-risk youth through Bible study and mentoring. For the last 10 years, she has prepared Bible lessons, assisted in transporting children to church, taught art and crocheting and bakes four dozen brownies weekly. To date, Minnick has baked nearly 12,000 brownies for participating youth. She has also encouraged neighbors to donate school supplies to ensure participants are prepared for their first day of school.

AAA Auto Club South is the supporting sponsor of the Governor's Point of Light Award. Walt Disney World is an in-kind supporter. This program recognizes Florida residents who demonstrate exemplary service to the community. Award recipients are announced weekly. A panel of judges comprised of leaders in the areas of volunteerism and service evaluate all nominations and make recommendations to the Governor. Florida's Foundation manages the program.
